DiDIY, organization and work

The DiDIY phenomenon shakes organizational roles by enabling disintermediation of experts. This is a key assumption of the project, and the specific subject of the sub-project (work package) named “DiDIY impact on work and organizations” (work package leader: Aurelio Ravarini, LIUC)

By exploiting the availability and ease of use of Digital Technologies, organizational roles typically dependent on experts (internal or external to the organization) can carry out - autonomously - innovative practices.

For example: workmen in the production plants can set up a pilot project to monitor the production flow (using Arduino boards and sensors) without or limitedly asking support to the IT department; R&D employees can create (with 3D printers) prototypes of new products, without requiring consultancy from R&D consulting firms, marketing employees can set up a marketing campaign by creating a mobile app, without or limitedly asking support to the IT department.
 

Possible examples of contexts where the DiDIY phenomenon has an impact on work and organization are:

  • Operation department head, carrying out prototyping activities without asking support to engineering firms, using 3D printers;
  • Quality managers in a production plant who deal with quality control without support from IT specialist (employees or consultants), by setting up an IoT system along the production line;
  • Marketing specialists who create advertising campaigns without the support of IT specialists (employees or consultants) by creating a dedicated web site and using social networking platforms.
Impact:
