Centre for Policy Modelling, Manchester Metropolitan University

The Manchester Metropolitan University (MMU) is the largest campus-based undergraduate university in the UK with a total student population of more than 37,000. Although it was awarded university status in 1992, its roots in higher education go back over 150 years. It has a number of research centres and groups that have worldwide excellence, one of which is the Centre for Policy Modelling (CfPM). The CPM is a dedicated research centre, which has gained a worldwide reputation in social simulation modelling.

The Centre for Policy Modelling (CfPM) has expertise in all aspects of social simulation, including: methodology, validation techniques, software tools, and applications. Whilst some in the social simulation field aim at simple abstract models with wide (but analogical) explanatory ambition, the CPM specialises in the opposite end of the spectrum: intricate, evidence-led simulations that reflect the observed social complexity and are useful in informing about possible policy outcomes. In particular, it uses mixtures of qualitative and quantitative evidence to specify the models, as well as using research models as the basis for targeted policy visualisation tools.
